Protection and management of paleontological resources is required by Federal regulations and some states. Therefore, evaluation and often mitigation of these resources is required by State/Federal agencies.

Absaroka was founded by dedicated professional paleontologists with over 25 years of combined experience providing professional paleontological services. Principal Paleontologists at Absaroka have conducted over three hundred paleontological resource management projects over the past fifteen years with projects in nearly every western state in the U.S. Our paleontologists have conducted all phases and technical aspects of paleontological resource projects for oil & gas exploration and development, pipelines, utility corridors, water resources development, and federal agencies.

We understand state and federal environmental laws and regulations pertaining to paleontological resources and have assisted numerous proponents maintain challenging schedules and budgets while meeting regulatory requirements. Absaroka is very proud to be part of the project solution and not a bottleneck or impedance to project schedules. We are well known by our clients for being responsive and reliable and are respected by the agencies we coordinate with for delivering high quality products.

Bureau of Land Management Paleontological Resource Special Use Permits have been, or are currently held in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Montana, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. In addition, US Forest Service permits have been, or are currently held for the Dakota Prairies Grasslands (ND), Thunder Basin Grasslands (WY), and the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest (WY).

Surveys and Monitoring

Absaroka rapidly and safely conducts pedestrian surveys or construction monitoring to identify paleontological resources for projects of any scale.

Past projects have included private, corporate, and government agency projects. Examples include, large 3D seismic projects (over 220 square miles), transmission line projects (237 miles), well pads and access roads, fiber optic and utility projects, and pipeline projects (over 150 miles).

Mitigation

Although most agencies and proponents prefer to avoid known paleontological resources, it may be more desirable to mitigate the resources by salvaging them for curation with a repository. Alternatively, construction activities may inadvertently encounter subsurface paleontological resources. In either situation, Absaroka paleontologists are extensively qualified and have significant experience conducting resource recovery, including its scientifically significant contextual data.

REports

Absaroka paleontologists assist our clients with meeting all regulatory reporting requirements for any scale of project.  We conduct all research, file searches, and report preparation with in-house paleontologists.  Resource assessments, sensitivity and probability  evaluations, desktop reviews, survey and monitoring reports, mitigation plans, and unanticipated discovery plans are prepared to meet all regulatory needs.  We also prepare the applicable sections of NEPA documents.
